Chiropractic

The Doctor of Chiropractic is a neuromusculoskeletal specialist, who works directly with the nerves, bones, muscles and joints of the body. These are the essential parts of the body that control your posture and your ability to move. When these parts of your body do not function well or are injured, they present as common conditions like: neck and back pain, headaches, numbness and tingling, poor sleep. Chiropractic care is a drug-free, non-invasive approach to treating common musculoskeletal conditions, and complications arising from treatment are rare.

There have been many controlled and independent research studies that have repeatedly shown that chiropractic care is safe and effective for treating low back pain, neck pain, headaches and other conditions relating to the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors assess and treat patients with disorders related to the spine, extremities, and pelvis and their effects on the nervous system. Chiropractors specialize in treating all regions of the body, including shoulders, knees, ankles and wrists.

Chiropractors can treat dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system with techniques such as joint manipulation, or adjustments (to help decrease pain and increase mobility), soft tissue techniques (to decrease scar tissue, and restore function), as well as prescribing strengthening, stretching and rehabilitation exercises to help restore function. Chiropractors can also give you strategies to help prevent future injuries, such as prescribing core strengthening exercises to help stabilize your spine and strengthen your abdominal muscles. If the nervous system is functioning without interference, the entire body functions at its best.

Massage Therapy/Reiki/Reflexology

Massage therapy addresses a variety of health conditions, specializing in relief for a wide range of conditions related to soft tissue and joint dysfunction, pain management, rehabilitation, and stress-related tension. Massage therapy uses a scientific method of using the hands to restore function and can aid with the healing process of many physical, mental and emotional ailments. Our Massage Therapists are registered through an organization who oversees required training and testing for all practitioners.

Custom Orthotics

Prescription orthotics are medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Orthotics work on the feet in the same way braces work on the teeth - by exerting gentle consistent pressure to bring muscles, ligaments and bones back into proper alignment. The overwhelming majority of lower limb problems, and a fair number of lower back, knee, and hip complaints, are caused by abnormal biomechanics of the foot. A large percentage of these problems can be successfully treated with shoe inserts - called orthotics.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of conditions. Traditionally it is based on the theory that energy, called Qi, flows through the body along different pathways, known as meridians. When there is interference along these pathways, it causes an imbalance or stagnation of QI, resulting in illness. Acupuncture is used to correct the imbalances by the insertion of thin sterile needles into certain acupuncture points along the meridian.

The scientific explanation of acupuncture relates to the stimulation of the nerves and neuro-hormonal reflexes. This stimulates the body to produce endorphins (a naturally occurring pain-relieving chemical) as well as the anti-inflammatory and healing response. It is a safe and effective treatment method and is commonly used as an adjunct to other therapies in clinical practice.

Acupuncture is effective in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, such as headaches, rotator cuff injuries, tennis/golfer’s elbow, sciatica, hip pain, osteoarthritis, and many sport injuries. Other common conditions, such as stress, fibromyalgia, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, induction of labour etc. have also been known to benefit from acupuncture.

Kinesiotaping

Kinesio taping is a therapeutic taping method that uses a uniquely designed elastic tape. The application of this tape enhances the function of many different tissues and physiological systems. This facilitates the body’s own natural healing process and movement by structurally lifting the skin.

Kinesio taping can be used to treat muscles, nerves, joints, pain, and swelling.

When applied properly, Kinesio Tape assisted in re-educating the neuromuscular system, reduce pain, optimize performance, prevent injury, and improve circulation and healing.

Cupping

A traditional therapy used for relief from muscle spasms, back pain, joint pain, sciatica and arthritic and rheumatic problems, digestive issues and respiratory illness. It’s a simple method of pulling “stuck,” stagnant and congealed blood, and body fluids out of an injured area. Cupping uses negative pressure (suction) to release rigid soft tissue, drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions, lift connective tissue and increase blood flow to stagnant skin and muscles.

In addition, it stimulates the organ-related zones in the skin to further improve the function of inner organs, including liver, stomach, intestines, and kidneys. Cupping is also thought to increase immunity in a particular area, since the suction causes the release of a histamine-like substance in the skin, which stimulates the immune system.

Benefits can include:

  • Increased blood circulation
  • Acute and chronic soft tissue injury
  • Stimulating to the lymphatic system (reducing edema/swelling)
  • Removes congestion in joints & increased secretion of synovial fluid
  • Stimulates parasympathetic system (reducing anxiety, fatigue, high blood pressure)
  • Digestive problems such as stomach ache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation
  • Increases digestive secretions and enhances peristaltic (intestinal muscle contraction) movement on intestines
  • Gynecological problems such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation)
  • Lung problems such as cold, fever, cough, asthma

Cupping is the oldest and most globally practiced medical treatment in human history. Most cultures can produce historical evidence that some variation of cupping was used regularly in their medical histories. Cupping is an incredibly ancient and universal practice that spans both East and West, so talk to your practitioner about incorporating some cupping into your next treatment.
